About Stride

Stride Counselling offers practical, compassionate psychotherapy for people navigating anxiety, ADHD, depression, parenting stress, separation/divorce, trauma, burnout, and major life transitions.

Many clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to begin. Some are parents trying to stay grounded through family change. Some are men who have spent years “just pushing through.” Others are adults recognizing ADHD or executive functioning challenges and wanting tools that actually fit real life.

At Stride, therapy is collaborative, respectful, and practical. We work together to better understand what is happening, identify patterns that are no longer serving you, and build realistic next steps toward a more grounded and meaningful life.

Nate Venema

Owner/Operator (he/him)

I’m Nate Venema, a Registered Social Worker and therapist with over 25 years of experience in counselling, education, social services, and community support.

My background includes counselling students at Brock University and Niagara College, working in addictions services, supporting youth transitioning out of incarceration in Grand Rapids, teaching in challenging school settings in Michigan, and teaching internationally in Nigeria. These experiences have shaped my practical, grounded, and compassionate approach to therapy.

I work with adults, young adults, parents, and men navigating ADHD and executive functioning challenges, anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting stress, separation and divorce, burnout, career uncertainty, and major life transitions.

I have a particular interest in supporting people who may not typically see themselves as “therapy people” — including men, fathers, students, professionals, tradespeople, veterans, and adults who are trying to keep life together while feeling overwhelmed inside.

I am also working toward formal certification as an ADHD Executive Functioning Coach, which reflects my growing focus on helping clients with organization, follow-through, emotional regulation, procrastination, overwhelm, and life-management systems.

My approach draws from CBT, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, strengths-based therapy, and practical coaching strategies. I aim to provide a space that is warm, honest, humorous when helpful, and focused on meaningful change.

Treatment Approach

View our therapeutic techniques.

Shape your behavior through storytelling with narrative therapy. Empower yourself by choosing helpful narratives that align with your life journey, helping you to shape your story and become who you want to be in life.

I offer the option to meet clients at public parks or neighbourhoods and conduct sessions over a walk. Nature lovers often find this method of therapy additionally helpful, as walking provides built-in opportunities to reflect and become more mindful.  Additionally, experiencing nature has positive effects on our mental and physical health; time outside promotes healing and reduces stress. By becoming more connected to nature, people can be more connected to being present in their own bodies, away from distractions.

Focus on your goals and strengths with SFBT. Envision a desirable future and map out changes to realize your vision, building on your strengths for positive change and encouragement to build on your strengths instead of dwelling on perceived issues.

Uncover the power of CBT, where thoughts shape emotions and behaviors. Experience proven techniques addressing various disorders like depression or anxiety, promoting efficient and effective therapy tailored to your unique needs, modifying related thoughts and behaviours.

Navigate behavior change with MI, a method encouraging self-exploration and confronting ambivalence. Consider positive changes with therapists skilled in motivational interviewing to help change behaviours like drinking or mild addictions.

Take the lead in your therapeutic journey with person-centered therapy. Experience compassionate facilitation and support that encourages self-discovery and personal growth, with the therapist facilitating, listening and lending a compassionate ear without interruption.

Come as you are. Embark on a therapeutic journey with culturally sensitive therapists who recognize the value of diverse backgrounds. Experience personalized therapy that respects your unique values, practices, and beliefs.

Improve communication, strengthen relationships, and address both positive and challenging aspects of family or couple dynamics. Experience the positive impact of family and marital therapy, and repair harmful and negative areas of important relationships, mending bonds.
